Your work surfaces form an integral part of your kitchen's total look and feel. To keep your surfaces looking great and to prevent damage to them, you have to follow a few recommendations.
Do not sit, stand or kneel on your counters
Do not cut directly on the surface as scratching will occur, always use a chopping board
Do not drop heavy objects onto the surface or edges
Using a trivet for resting hot objects away from your surface is highly recommended. This includes use of trivets under loose-standing cooking units such as electric frying pans or roaster ovens. Sudden, rapid change in temperature might cause damage to your worktops.
Do not use abrasive cleaners or strong chemicals and solvents to clean stubborn stains.
Do not leave wet/damp steel pots standing on the worktops as they might leave a rust mark which will need some time and effort to remove.
Do not forcefully scrub any area of the countertop
Do not allow water to pool around sinks and faucets areas for prolonged periods of time.
High-Pressured Laminated Work surfaces/Formica
Laminated work surfaces can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Extreme heat may cause damage to the surface thus it is recommended to always use a trivet under a hot pot, pan or container. Do not expose laminated worktops to prolonged water spills, especially by sink or tap areas. Keep it dry by wiping away excessive water when finished cooking and cleaning.
Keep work surfaces dry by immediately wiping away any liquid or water spillage particularly in prep bowl areas, sculleries and bathrooms. No wet crockery, pots and utensils to be left to stand on the work surfaces. Damp iron or steel pots standing on the surfaces might cause permanent staining. Always use a hot pad or trivet between work surface and hot pots, pans or bowls. Clean surfaces with a damp cloth and some mild soapy water and dry afterwards with a soft cloth. It is recommended that solid wood surfaces be pampered to prevent it from drying out and cracking by oiling it regularly with a soft dry cloth.
Granites, Marble and Onyx
Natural Granite can be cleaned daily with products like Handy Andy and Windowlene. To prolong the need for resealing granite, use a wax-based product like Mr Min furniture polish approximately twice a week.
Marble and onyx are very sensitive and should ideally be cleaned with natural stone cleaners and resealed every six months. Please refer to the worktops fabricator for recommended cleaning products, cleaning of stubborn stains and resealing of surfaces.
Quartz Surfaces (Engineered worktops i.e. Caeserstone)
Quartz surfaces will keep their enduring lustre and beauty for years to come, with minimal effort. Warm water and a splash of mild detergent is all that’s required to keep them looking their best, and to make things even easier, there’s no need to wax or seal.
Neolith is highly resistant to very high temperatures and is extremely stain and scratch resistant. Neolith doesn't need any special care and is very easy to keep clean. General cleaning involve washing with water or a diluted household detergents such as dishwashing liquid, which is enough to restore the surface to its original condition. Occasionally, deeper cleaning might be needed especially straight after installation when cement may be left on the surface. Any remaining cement can be removed by washing with warm water or very diluted acidic solutions (diluted vinegar).
Be careful when choosing the cleaning agent to use, as in the majority of cases damage to the surface is caused by using cleaning products that are too strong (high concentrations hydrochloric acid, etc). Sometimes using products that are unsuitable for the type of surface, such as cleaning agents with abrasive particles, can alter the appearance of the surface.
Tighten any loose handles or knobs regularly and replace any broken handles to prevent damage to cupboard fronts or possible injury. Hinges should be checked if the doors don't open and close properly. The hinges should be tightened with a screwdriver if loose or replaced if excessively worn.
